The ambient masterclass of Pete Namlook
· byHaggiston September 27 2010 19:44:13

Pete Namlook otherwise known as Peter Kuhlman, is one German who has a vast music catalogue under his belt. He set up the FAX 49-69/450464 record label in 1992 and has worked on numerous collaborations with the likes of Klaus Schulze (Tangerine Dream), Richie Hawtin, Bill Laswell, Mixmaster Morris (The Irresistable Force), Geir Jenssen (otherwise known as Biosphere), Tetsu Inoue and Move D. Pete defines ambient music as music that takes the listener on a journey.

Pete envisages good ambient music as music that takes the listener on a journey. In contrast, Brian Eno said that ambient music was like music wallpaper, it stays in the background and serves the environment. I think this shows that ambient music can have many different interpretations.

The FAX label started out with Pete releasing Trance and dance music before he undertook the ambient music direction which he is so well known for now.

Pete Namlook has produced some phenomenal stuff over the years. But there are so many releases it’s hard to keep on top of what are the best ones. Some essential series releases / collaborations that spring to mind are Dreamfish, Dark Side of the Moog, Air, The Fires of Ork, From Within and Silence. So what we’d like please people is your recommendations for his best works. Once we get some good responses we’ll document his best albums on the site for everyone to view.
