Namlook and Montana release Labyrinth 2 on Fax
Labyrinth 2 is the second collaboration between Pete Namlook and Lorenzo Montana on Pete's prolific Fax label. Pete Namlook needs no introduction and is widely regarded as one of the ambient pioneers. Lorenzo Montana is from Bologne, Italy. He released his excellent debut album 'Black Ivy' through the Fax label in 2009. 'Black Ivy' was full of ideas but cohesive at the same time and is an accomplished piece of work. It comes highly recommended.

Pete has collaborated with many artists over the years. Bill Laswell, Richie Hawtin, Klaus Schulze, Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J) and Geir Jenssen (aka Biosphere) to name but a few. It's always interesting to see how two producers come together when making an album. With Lorenzo Montana and the sheer scope he had shown us on his debut album 'Black Ivy', we were intrigued to hear this, their second collaborative effort.

The album is made up of 2 discs, a DTS 5.1 Surround disc and a 2-Channel Stereo disc. Sound and your listening experience is obviously at the forefront of this package. With 8 tracks (Path IX - Path XVI) spanning in at a little over 58 minutes the scene is set for Labyrinth 2.

Opener Path IX starts with some melodic chords and Namlook sounds that are reminiscent of some of his early works. This ambient background is further enhanced by what sounds like someone breathing before the beat comes in effortlessly. Path X unfolds with skittering beats and uplifting chords which ebb and flow, again underpinned by Namlook's ambient masterclass. Track 3 (Path XI) brings together a darker vision altogether and is more about texture rather than melody. Path XIV soars into something beautiful with the careful use of beatwork and lush keys which really are moving. Over the 8 tracks there isn't a dud in sight.

After a few listens this album really excels in so many different ways. The Namlook sound which he's so well known for is here in bounds but there's something fresh that makes this project all the more unique. To say these two work well together is an understatement. We hope these two musical craftsmen continue to collaborate in the future. What they have created here is no less than stunnning and a must have for your collection.
