Mir by Ott is his most accomplished yet
· bychrison March 22 2011 12:31:04

Ott is a sonic wizard who's track record speaks for itself. Otherwise known as Grover Smith, he worked as a freelance engineer for Youth, Sinead O'Connor, Brian Eno and The Orb amongst others before becoming an artist in his own right. So to say that Ott is a master when it comes to production and studio equipment is an understatement. Having already released two albums to critical acclaim, Blumenkraft (2003) and Skylon (2008), his third offering dare we say it is his most musically diverse and complete to date.

'Mir' consists of seven tracks, each one taking the listener on a journey. Soundwise, think of a more dubbed out Shpongle (his best friend) where musicality is the order of the day. The first track 'One day I wish to have this kind of time' creates a blissed out mood with singing birds and a calming voice which starts "don't let yourself or your ears be offended by improper or unscheduled sounds...." This intro floats along effortlessly before the dub kicks in and alters the course of the track entirely. 'Adrift in hilbert space' has more trancey undertones and 'Owl stretching time' has some really satisfying squelches and effects. 'Squirrels and biscuits' is unmistakably Ott with it's eastern ethnic samples which are both trippy and hypnotic. The album finishes on 'The aubergine of the sun' where again Ott shows off his musical diversity and prowess.

It's hard to describe this album in words. But I really don't think that was ever Ott's intention. Like what the opening sample on track 1 tells us ....'Don't bother about what it means, your brain will take care of that by itself'.

'Mir' reaffirms what Ott is capable of. Grover not only takes dub, downtempo and psychedelia to new heights, he smashes the genre barrier wide open with his sheer musical scope and vision. Highly recommended listening.
