Daft Punk do elecTRONica in style!
· bychrison December 06 2010 11:14:35

Daft Punk have a huge electronic following having released the quality albums Homework and Discovery They have followed suit with the likes of Underworld, Orbital and Massive attack and composed the movie score for the new Tron movie titled Tron Legacy. The transition from producing an electronic album to an epic movie soundtrack is a difficult one to pull off.

The first track 'Overture' consists of cinematic strings and really builds an atmosphere of tension. 'The grid' continues with the cinematics. It's only well into the track that you detect any electronic elements at all. 'The son of Flynn' alters the mood with jumping melodic synths and is underpinned by a low rumbling bass.

Many of these tracks follow a dramatic theme where they build, only altering with slight melodic and cinematic shifts. I think we can safely say that this soundtrack perfectly compliments the look and feel of the film, even just from looking at the trailer. But, truth be told, these tracks also stand well on their own.

'Rinzler' is somewhat more electronic territory but the building strings are still ever present. More synths and strings ensue before 'End of the line' with its gurgling electronics and edgy cords. 'Derezzed' is unmistakably Daft Punk in its execution. The track 'End titles' has had a lot of airplay and is probably the most accessible number on the album.

Those of you expecting another 'Homework' or 'Discovery' may feel slightly let down. Upon first listen, much of it could be mistaken for a modern classical soundtrack. It's only on repeated listens that the often subtle electronics shine through. A powerful and moving film score that will only help cement Daft Punk in dance music's hall of fame. A must hear more than once album.
