Big Bud shows us how it is done with Kool Beans
· bychrison July 01 2011 11:23:35

Drum and bass has been stagnant territory for so many listeners over the years with the same sounds being regurgitated over and over again. Not so with Big Bud. A producer who's been at the top of his game since his amazing debut album 'Infinity + Infinity' on Good Looking Records back in 1999. Very much pigeon-holed as intelligent drum and bass, his sound has branched out and touches on many different genres. What is immediately apparent on this, his 6th album to date, is that he's not afraid to explore new ground. Furthermore, he pulls it off in style.

Kool Beans by Big Bud aka Robin O'Reilly is his third album on his own Sound Trax label and is quite an apt title considering the level of production that's gone into this. Album opener 'Lady sings the blues' is a jazzy number with piano and guitar motifs over soulful vocals. 'Feeling Inside' is upbeat and has a steady beat throughout while 'Dunja Dub' gets deep with its dubwise samples and hypnotic beats. Track four 'Juicy' veers into more intelligent dnb territory with some complex arrangements. 'Blues for Zoran' has saxophone, guitar and piano samples which create a middle-eastern vibe.

'This kinda love' has stabbbing electronics over well considered piano notes. Track seven sees Big Bud remix Mission by Mikal, adding his own depth and 'Changes' has DRS on vocals giving a thought-provoking message. Dub is the order of the day for the albums last three tracks with 'Wadada Dub' being the standout and one of the albums highlights.

This is a highly focused piece of work which will reward the listener on many different levels. It's obvious that Robin has a deep understanding of many different genres. And what's more, he isn't afraid of expermenting and pushing the barrier. A great album and a must have for drum and bass and electronic music fans...
